Don't Waste Your Money on OpenClaw Until You've Done These 3 Things

Don't Waste Your Money on OpenClaw Until You've Done These 3 Things

Author: @milesdeutscher

English

This is the only way to truly maximise your OpenClaw workflows - and nobody is talking about it.

English

The biggest problem with OpenClaw is that most people set it up and quickly realise they have no real use cases for it - leaving them with broken workflows, wasted time, and money.

Here's what most creators aren't telling you: Buying a Mac Mini (or Studio) won't fix a workflow you haven't figured out yet.

English

Before you spend a single dollar on a proper OpenClaw setup, there are three crucial steps you need to complete first.

English

Phase One: Ideation, Thinking & the Time Audit

English

Before you even touch an agentic AI tool, master this.

You need to learn how to actually use AI properly - in a creative, strategic way.

Most people use AI as a search engine. They ask it questions and take the answers at face value.

That's not how you get value from AI, and certainly not how to use a tool like OpenClaw.

English

Before you even think about automating workflows, you need to master how to use AI as a thinking partner - someone to argue with, stress-test ideas with, and brainstorm alongside.

There are a couple of effective, easy ways to do this.

English

1. Just Prompt (easiest method)

Instead of figuring out how to do this on your own, steal my master prompt to get started.

This prompt will stress-test any idea and have AI brutally review your thought processes.

中文

1. 直接用 Prompt(最简单的方法)

English

2. Mentor Project & Instructions Refinement (very important)

AI is built to agree with you. LLMs have system prompts that enable them to be user-friendly & keep users hooked.

To bypass this, here's what to do:

a) Start a new project on any AI platform & upload this text to the project context:

"You are my ruthless mentor. I will use this project to brainstorm, strategise, and ideate with you. Be straightforward, honest, and brutally stress-test all my ideas."

b) Go to your AI settings, and add this to the personalisation instructions:

"Be ruthless, direct, and honest. Brutally stress-test every idea I bring you. Don't flatter me - challenge me."

中文

2. Mentor

English

While you can't fully bypass system prompts, you can tweak the AI's outputs with instructions like this.

I want you to spend the next week communicating with AI in this Mentor project and testing the prompt above.

Learn to brainstorm, learn to strategise, and learn to communicate with AI collaboratively.

English

The Time Audit

Now, the important part.

Next step: track every minute of your day for one full week.

Exactly what you do daily, manual processes, typical workday - literally everything.

My recommendation for executing this: Create another new AI project where you just prompt the chat on everything you're doing.

I.e., "It's 9:15 on Monday, and I'm scanning my emails now."

Once the full week is complete, export a full PDF/spreadsheet version that you can download.

This will all come together - trust me.

Phase Two: Pre-OpenClaw Testing

Once you've completed phase one, you're ready to start testing agentic tools.

Take your time-audit PDF and give it to the Mentor project we created earlier.

Prompt a new chat:

"I'm looking to get started with OpenClaw. However, I want to make sure I can maximise my agentic workflows before investing in a proper OpenClaw setup. As my mentor, I want you to take this time audit and analyse my work over the past week. Explain exactly what processes I can start automating, and which AI tools (other than OpenClaw) I can start testing now."

English

The mentor will likely recommend AI tools like: Manus, n8n, Zapier, Lindy, & CrewAI.

For the next week, carve out 60 minutes per day to test these basic automation tools.

Automate email scraping, SOP generation, web research, etc., etc.

The goal in this phase is simple: figure out which processes are practical to automate for your specific situation.

Some automations will break, some processes won't be feasible to automate, and some will work.

Take note of what works (a simple Notion database for storing this data works).

English

Phase Three: OpenClaw Experimentation 101

You know which processes you can automate and which you can't - you're already ahead of 99% of people who've ever installed OpenClaw.

Finally, you're ready to start actually testing OpenClaw (with a catch).

What I want you to do now is install OpenClaw locally, preferably on a low-risk alternative device.

You have two options: 1) low-cost VPS setup (Hostinger) 2) local setup (old/low-risk device)

No insane $1000+ Mac setup yet & no access to sensitive data - just a simple, local setup.

This is now your new testing sandbox.

English

In your new testing environment, try transferring any automated workflows that worked in phase two to OpenClaw.

I.e., if you used Manus for Gmail management, ask OpenClaw how it can overtake that process and brainstorm how to centralise that automation within OpenClaw effectively.

(this is why phase one is so important; if you skipped it, you won't be able to properly brainstorm/strategise with OpenClaw now).

After experimenting for a few days, you'll need to come to a conclusion about whether OpenClaw is personally worth it for you.

If your basic OpenClaw workflows already add real value, upgrading to a Mac Mini and a more advanced setup is probably a worthwhile investment.

If it's helpful but not life-changing, just keep OpenClaw sandboxed on your local device. Use it as a mini assistant.

If it's not helpful at all, go back to using the AI tools you used in phase two.

English

Outro

In my opinion, this is the right way to get started with OpenClaw without overcommitting.

Even if you conclude OpenClaw isn't for you, hopefully, this process at least showed you some alternative AI tools or, at the very least, taught you how to properly communicate/brainstorm with AI (a very valuable skill).
